Description

A BATHING APE was started in Tokyo in 1993 by Nigo, who opened the shop NOWHERE in Ura-Harajuku together with Jun Takahashi of UNDERCOVER and sold the first pieces there. The name comes from the Japanese expression for a bathing ape in lukewarm water, an image of a generation grown comfortable. The whole line is built on Planet of the Apes — the ape head itself, and the motto APE SHALL NEVER KILL APE, a line from Battle for the Planet of the Apes — and the brand grew out of that one Harajuku shop into a label sold worldwide.
