Measurement Guide
Getting the right fit starts with accurate measurements. This guide will show you how to measure your garments using the Flat Method, the most common approach used outside Japan.
💡 Pro Tip from our Jeans Sommelier
Don’t just rely on the size tag! Japanese denim sizes can vary significantly between brands. For the best fit, measure your favorite pair of jeans using the method below and compare those numbers to our size charts.
Understanding Shrinkage
Denim can shrink depending on how it’s processed. Here’s what you should expect:
- Raw (Unsanforized) Denim:
Will shrink after the first wash. Approximate shrinkage:
Waist: 2–3 cm
Thigh, Knee, Leg Opening: 1–2 cm
Inseam: 5–6 cm - One-Wash Denim:
Already pre-shrunk. Measurements will remain consistent with minimal changes after washing.
Always check if the jeans are raw or one-wash before measuring.
How to Measure Pants (Flat Method)
- Waist: Lay flat and measure straight across the top of the waistband. Multiply by 2.
- Thigh: Measure 2.5 cm below the crotch seam straight across. Multiply by 2.
- Inseam: Measure from the crotch seam to the bottom hem along the inner leg.
- Leg Opening: Measure across the bottom hem. Multiply by 2.
- Front Rise: Measure from the top of the front waistband to the crotch seam.
- Back Rise: Measure from the top of the back waistband to the crotch seam.
How to Measure Tops (Flat Method)
- Shoulder Width: Measure from shoulder seam to shoulder seam across the back.
- Chest: Measure from armpit to armpit. Multiply by 2.
- Sleeve Length: Measure from the shoulder seam to the end of the cuff.
- Body Length: Measure from the highest point of the shoulder to the bottom hem.

FAQs
Should I size up for raw denim?
Yes, especially if you plan to wash the jeans. Raw denim shrinks after the first wash, so consider going up one size.
Why are your measurements different from the size tag?
Because we measure the actual garment, not the brand’s tagged size. Always check our measurement chart.
Do you measure before or after washing?
For raw denim, we measure before washing. One-wash items are measured after the washing process is complete.
